Indeed India job search: how the aggregator actually works in 2026

Indeed has the most job listings in India but most applications disappear. Here is how the ranking works, where listings come from, and what gets you seen.

Indeed India has more job listings than any other portal. It also has some of the worst application-to-response rates.

Both things are true for the same reason. When a platform aggregates from thousands of sources, volume goes up and quality control goes down. See which job portal fits your profile if Indeed is not your only channel. Listings are duplicated, stale, or pulled from company career pages that already closed the role. If you are applying on Indeed and hearing nothing, the problem is often not your resume. Half those listings are not active anymore.

How Indeed actually works

Indeed is an aggregator first and a job board second. It pulls listings from company career pages, Naukri, LinkedIn, and thousands of other sources automatically. It also hosts direct postings. The result is the largest raw volume of any portal, and the most duplicates.

The Job Match Score

When you apply, Indeed calculates a Job Match Score based on keyword overlap between your resume and the job description. This score is shown to the recruiter alongside your application. High match scores surface higher in recruiter dashboards.

The score looks at:

  • Job titles in your experience versus the role title
  • Skills listed in your resume versus skills mentioned in the JD
  • Years of experience mentioned in the JD versus your total experience
Important

Indeed indexes your resume text separately from your uploaded PDF. Completing the Indeed Resume Builder, even if you also attach a PDF, gives you double coverage. The builder feeds the Job Match Score directly. Skipping it costs ranking points you do not get back.

Application timing

Indeed shows recruiters when each application came in and how many days ago the job was posted. Most recruiters review applications in the first 48–72 hours after a listing goes live. Applications that come in on day 5 of a 7-day-old listing get less attention, not because of a rule, but because the recruiter has already moved on.

The "Actively Recruiting" badge on a listing means the posting has a high application-to-hire conversion rate. These are worth prioritising.

Tip

Set job alerts for specific role and city combinations, not broad categories. When a relevant listing triggers an alert, apply the same day. Day 1 applications get reviewed. Day 4 applications get skimmed if the recruiter has time.

The India-specific problem: duplicate listings

Many listings on Indeed India are pulled automatically from Naukri and company career pages. The same role appears multiple times: once from the company directly, once from the Naukri aggregation, and sometimes a third time from a job aggregator that picked it up from Naukri.

Before applying through Indeed, do two things:

1

Check the listing age

If a listing is more than 5 days old and does not have the "Actively Recruiting" badge, the role is likely already past the active hiring window. Scroll past it.

2

Find the original source

Click through to the company career page directly. Apply there instead of through Indeed. Direct applications bypass the Indeed application stack and land in the company's ATS without the extra layer.

3

Check for duplicates

Search the same role + company on Naukri. If the listing exists there and was posted earlier, apply on Naukri, it will have more recruiter visibility as the original source.

Where Indeed India actually performs well

Indeed is not strong everywhere in the Indian market. It punches above its weight in three areas:

BPO and shared services. Indeed is the dominant sourcing channel for BPO, KPO, and MNC-captive operations roles. If your target is Accenture Operations, Genpact, WNS, or similar, Indeed often has listings that do not appear anywhere else.

MNC corporate roles. Large multinationals with global ATS systems (Workday, Greenhouse, Taleo) often post on Indeed automatically because their global careers pages get indexed. These are sometimes not on Naukri at all.

Fresher IT and support roles. Indeed India has strong coverage for entry-level IT support, junior developer, and analyst roles, particularly in Tier 2 cities where Naukri's coverage thins out.

Note

Indeed owns Glassdoor. Company reviews, salary data, and interview experiences from Glassdoor are surfaced inline when you view a company on Indeed. Use this before applying. It takes 30 seconds and tells you whether the company is worth your time.

Profile optimisation: the Indeed Resume Builder

Most candidates upload a PDF and stop. The Indeed Resume Builder is a separate profile that feeds the Job Match Score algorithm directly.

Upload PDF only. Indeed's Job Match Score only partially reads the PDF parser extracts what it can
Complete the Resume Builder AND attach PDF for full match score coverage coverage for match scoring

Fill every section in the Resume Builder:

  • Work experience with start and end dates
  • Education with degree and institution
  • Skills: add these manually. Do not rely on extraction
  • Certifications if relevant

After completing it, update one field every few weeks. Like Naukri, Indeed's algorithm favours recently active profiles.

Skills Assessments: worth doing for specific roles

Indeed offers free Skills Assessments, short tests for Excel, SQL, data entry, customer service, accounting, and similar. Passing one adds a verified badge to your profile that is visible to recruiters.

These matter most for roles where the skill is the primary requirement. A "Microsoft Excel, Expert" badge on a finance or operations profile carries weight. For a senior software engineering role, it is less relevant.

Tip

Take the assessment for your primary hard skill if it is available. Most candidates skip them. A verified badge with an above-average score puts you in a smaller pool for filtering-heavy recruiter searches.

Indeed's listings are real but the signal-to-noise is low. The candidates who get responses apply fast, target the right categories (BPO, MNC, entry-level IT), complete the Resume Builder, and go direct to the company career page when possible.

Apply early or skip it. A 6-day-old listing with no "Actively Recruiting" badge is not worth your time.
